E-LETTER NO. 85 – 29 JULY 2010
EDITED THIS WEEK BY: Deborah Anderson
They say that actions speak louder than words, so here is something to bear in mind…A man was being tailgated by a stressed out woman on a busy boulevard. Suddenly, the light turned yellow, just in front of him.
He did the right thing, stopping at the crosswalk, even though he could have beaten the red light by accelerating through the intersection.
The tailgating woman was furious and honked her horn, screaming in frustration as she missed her chance to get through the intersection, dropping her phone and makeup.
As she was still in mid-rant, she heard a tap on her window and looked up into the face of a very serious police officer.
The officer ordered her to exit her car with her hands up. He took her to the police station where she was searched, finger printed, photographed and placed in a holding cell.
After a couple of hours, a policeman approached the cell and opened the door. She was escorted back to the booking desk where the arresting officer was waiting with her personal effects.
He said, "I'm very sorry for this mistake. You see, I pulled up behind your car while you were blowing your horn, flipping off the guy in front of you, and cussing a blue streak at him. "I noticed the 'Choose Life' license plate holder, the 'What Would Jesus Do' bumper sticker, the 'Follow Me to Sunday School' bumper sticker, and the chrome-plated Christian fish emblem on the trunk.
"Naturally. I assumed you had stolen the car."

SYNOD YEAR BOOK 2010/2011
It has been brought to our attention that there has been a glitch with our database. This has resulted in the churches for Derbyshire and Lincolnshire having incorrect numbers for membership inserted in the yearbook. Attached is an updated sheet giving correct information. Can you please update your yearbooks accordingly. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.
If you wish to own a copy, these are available from the Synod Office @ £2 if collected or £2.50 if posted. For other changes to the Yearbook, please visit page 4.

LEICESTERSHIRE COFFEE MORNING IN AID OF LAUNDE ABBEY - You are all invited! This will take place at Wigston Magna United Reformed Church, Long Street Wigston Magna. On Saturday 21st August 2010 from 10.30am - 1.00pm. Please do come along! OADBY URC - ADOPTED CHARITY – 2009-2010 - On Sunday 27th June, Derick Horsfall was invited to take part in the morning service. Derick is an ambassador, fund raiser and volunteer driver for LOROS (Leicestershire and Rutland Organisation for the Relief of Suffering.) Derick’s role in the service was to receive three cheques for LOROS, and also a donation from Sainsbury’s as part of their Local Heroes scheme. In total £1824.17 was handed to Derick. This represented a year’s hard work by all at Oadby URC. Many thanks go to all who supported the fundraising events throughout the year. After he received the cheques, Derick spoke about the work of the Hospice. It is hoped, that this money will in some small way enable LOROS to continue their valuable work. FAREWELL LUNCH – REVD JAMES GARROW - On Sunday 11th July during his farewell lunch, a presentation was made to the Revd James Garrow on behalf of the Oadby URC by Mrs Paddy Letts. Family, friends and members of the South Leicestershire Group had time to chat and reminisce over his time spent at Oadby. We will all miss his faithful service given to the Oadby church and the South Leicestershire Group over the last twenty years. His future home will be nearer to his family in Birmingham. GROBY UNITED REFORMED CHURCH - For the second year running we were involved in running a six day programme of events for the elderly of Groby called Holiday @ Home to provide a holiday experience without having to travel out of the village. This was run under auspices of Churches Together in Groby, but apart from two off-site visits, the whole event was held at the URC. The theme for this year was “Up, up and Away”, with holiday flights (of fancy) each day. The sun shone all week and over fifty guests thoroughly enjoyed their six days holiday experiences. The entertainment programme varied daily. There was lunch, music and buggy rides at the Shuttlewood Clarke Foundation’s, Ulverscroft Grange and Manor. Then a fun, games and creativity afternoon. Next day a three course luncheon was followed by music from flight Captain Cliff. On the Friday there was an in-flight movie afternoon with pop corn and ice cream and on Saturday afternoon a garden party in beautiful sunshine, where straw hats were much in evidence and as tradition dictates, homemade scones with strawberries and cream were served on the lawns. There were times of nostalgia when scenes of old Groby were projected onto a large screen and a further talking point when childhood photos were dusted off and brought along for the ‘Who do you think they are’ competition? The fun packed week was brought to a close on Sunday afternoon by Golden Oldies Songs of Praise, favourite hymns chosen and sung with much enthusiasm by the guests, with reflective moments on growing old gracefully. ‘Duty free’ cake and an awards ceremony brought the week to its final destination – safely home to Groby. |

THE VISION4LIFE STEERING GROUP We need to ensure that signed up churches get their deliveries of 50 booklets each to the correct address. If you have changed your delivery address or sign up details at all (perhaps your church secretary or minister has changed since you signed up which may be as long as 2 years ago) please email Tracey Hardingham at tracey [dot] hardingham [at] urc [dot] org [dot] uk A huge number of booklets were returned last year because we had not been informed of changes. Please note that the Vision4Life database is separate from any other URC databases and therefore will not have been automatically updated with changed details unless you specifically tell us. 50 copies of the materials to each church regardless of their size... If you receive too many for your church, why not give one away to a friend and encourage them to get involved. Thank you for your help - if you email us your changed details, you can save a lot of hassle and also the URC some money! Please note that we are unable to send out booklets to addresses outside the United Kingdom. Keep on praying and using the wealth of resources on the website www.vision4life.org.uk
